U10 Coaching Philosophy
By Darrin Laishley

"It’s not a win unless all players take part"

Therefore we are responsible for:

Providing a safe physical environment. Make sure all facilities, equipment and exercises are risk assessed tom minimise the inherent dangers of playing hockey.

Communicate in a positive way. Everyone responds and learns positively if spoken to in the correct manner. Players, Parents, Officials and Managers must be treated positively and this demonstrates that the Coach has the best interests of his players at heart.

Teach the skills of Hockey. Players must be allowed to try and experiment under positive instruction. When drills are designed they must involve as many players as possible, keep them busy and keep them interested. Try to make drills simple, but most of all fun!

Teach the rules of Hockey. Rules speak for themselves, without them there would be chaos. Therefore the rules are adhered to from day one, as they are from the first face off in a match.

Direct players in competition. Coaching during training games and matches. This involves ensuring that all players participate and have fun. This is attained by setting lines, communicating positively with Officials and opposition, and also, making tactical decisions to maximise and reinforce skills that have been taught. We encourage our kids to compete, do their best and strive to win within the rules. Winning is not important, individual development is.

Help players become fit and value fitness for their lifetime. Try to teach kids to appreciate you need to be fit to play safely and successfully. It is also important to understand the value of fitness in life and playing hockey is fun that can keep you fit for a lifetime.

Help develop characters. We aim to develop characters by teaching how to care, to be honest, respect others and be responsible. These qualities are demonstrated and encouraged in learning skating, shooting, etc, team spirit and a positive attitude to hockey and all involved in their hockey life. Finally encouraging humour and fun!
